5 Things You Need To Know About Long-Term Goals

Long-Term Goals

The key to unlocking your long-term goals is to know your short-term actions. Ask yourself what are the steps you need to take to get to a particular goal? Sounds easy enough right? But what if you are trying to get into a role you have no experience with or you don’t know how to get to your goal? Here are 5 things you can use to nail those long-term goals.

Do Your Research

One of the more important steps in getting to your goals is: do your research! You are not the first person to do what you want to achieve. Try to reach out to people that have already done what you would like to achieve. Especially if it’s a specific role, try to find people on LinkedIn that are in the role you aspire to.

Don’t ask for general advice, but rather explain a situation and ask a specific question, so they can answer it easily. People are really open to sharing their experience.

Write Down Your Long-Term Goals and Actions

Set your goals and actions on paper. This is something I have made a mistake of in the past, of just keeping the goals in my head, where you can’t keep track of it. Long-term goals come from short-term actions.

Plan these short-term actions in your favourite to-do application and plan them in and check them off. The process of doing this will motivate you because you can see the actual progress you are making.

Be Vulnerable, Be Humble

I can’t stress this one enough. You are in a learning process, and you will stumble. Take failures as lessons, only that way can you improve. Dial down your ego to a level as low as possible, so you are susceptive to feedback and you can much easier ask for feedback. Remember, progress comes only if you accept yourself and your weaker points.

Listen Before You Speak

People tend to speak more than they do listen (there are whole discussions about this topic). Be honest, we love to hear ourselves speak about all kinds of topics. In a learning mindset though, you should listen and observe, because when you are talking, you are not listening.

Mastering skills comes only to those who listen. Think about the best leaders in the world, they are always mentioned for their incredible listening capabilities. If they do it, why shouldn’t you?

Believe in Yourself

At the end of the day, hitting your goal comes from the internal belief that you can achieve something. If you don’t believe in the things you can achieve, why should someone else believe in you?
